We’re not just feeding people; we want to teach people how to feed themselves.

Tell us about your history with New Path 1010 – how you found out about it and why you got involved.

I’m a Zaxby’s licensee and have been for 26 years. I’m on the tail end of my career and wanted to get more involved in the community. I did a lot of volunteering in a lot of different places and just kept gravitating towards New Path. The volunteers and the consistency and the professionalism of the nonprofit really stuck with me; I really like it.

I currently serve as a board member and have for about three years, but I also served as Executive Director for about a year.

How does New Path support the Barrow County community?

The people who formed New Path did a lot of homework in the beginning [as to what was most needed], and they decided on a food bag program for the local school system. Our mission is to stop generational poverty, and probably the best best way to do that is with kids.

I love how organized the packs are. And even when a school needed bags on a short notice, they just make it happen!

Why should people consider getting involved with New Path?

Nonprofits can’t make much headway without volunteers, and the dedication of New Path’s volunteers is amazing. Their depth, heart and soul just blows me away, and I think that really separates us from most nonprofits.

We’re not just feeding people; we want to teach people how to feed themselves. That’s not an easy thing to do, but we’re working with the school system to find those who need the most help and empower them to help themselves.

People want to be a part of something – something good and that’s going to actually help people. Intentions don’t really get you anywhere; it’s the feet on the street, and New Path does a good job with that.

Tell us a little bit about you!

My wife and I have been married for 31 years, and we have a son who’s 29 and a daughter who’s 27 – and both work in the Zaxby’s business with me. I go to Athens Church and have served there for over 10 years. Through Zaxby’s, I do a lot with the school system: I’ve been a partner in education for 20 years and am on a governance team with a local middle school. I’ve also served on the board of the chamber. I just love helping people help themselves.
